Happy Tours: Texas

Happy Tours highlights the sights and sounds of places throughout the United States and beyond. The series is the project of husband-and-wife duo photographer Michelle Maguire and writer Aaron Beck in Columbus, Ohio.

Aaron and I spent this past June driving around Texas, where we ate a lot of brisket; visited Larry McMurtry's Archer City bookstore and the blinking light from The Last Picture Show; floated down a river with our spirit guide Jerry DeCicca; hung out at chicken fried steak counters with our favorite happy hour pal Eve Searls in her new San Antonio; became the proud owners of a giant tumbleweed; met a cat called Cherry; met another cat called Squirrel; guzzled the coldest, crispest pilsners of our lives served to us by beautiful Lone Star state grandmas; listened to jukeboxes jammed full of Ernest Tubb, and Hank Snow, and Marty Robbins; hugged the Rio Grande as we made our way into Big Bend; pointed at road runners; roamed spaces – both indoors and out – transformed by Donald Judd and Dan Flavin; were almost eaten by Marfa’s high-desert sky. Here are some pictures.
